They all have a sad story, do they not?
Can you help me lift this couch into the Biopharmaceutical Defense Industry van?
He's got the perfect demeanor. Looks naive, innocent. Looks so concerned. Ppl who are top-level con artists. You always believe them. They touch your heart. Couple that with some "good dissident information" that opens our eyes, OMG! Promotes loyalty.
One thing about a con, if they'd gotten to your heart. You have to overcome the good feelings you inevitably will have toward them. Not an easy task. And will give a bad case of cognitive dissonance. Hardening your heart in the right direction without losing your soul. We have few or no role models in popular culture for this, I think.
Ted Bundy wearing a cast on his arm to get assistance loading the couch into the van.
However, the character Ted Bundy, who is mentioned as an inspiration for the killer Buffalo Bill, was known to sometimes pretend to have a broken arm to gain the confidence of a victim. This tactic is not explicitly shown in a scene in the movie, but it is referenced as part of the character’s backstory and the real-life inspiration for Buffalo Bill.

Good dig!
Sadly, a chunk of this description reminds me of a former potus running again and his loyal backers who refuse to see who he is, even based on his actions. Always an excuse for the guy NO matter what he does.
